    Unhappy Advice Please

Hey I was just wondering if any of you guys could help me. I was attempting some 4 note per string scales and felt a slight pain in the tendons of my wrist. Am I developing something like RSI? Does anyone know any methods of preventing this and should I avoid playing guitar for the next few days? Any feedback would be really appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Sometime you have to work through it and sometime you are doing harm. I can not advise you beyond that, but, if you do not get relief I'd lay off for awhile.

I notice that this site does use the 4nps and I'm not going to get into that, as I'm a guest here, but, with 3nps you do not have to stretch as far. If you continue having problems you might think about 3nps.

I say go see a doctor about it. That is the best thing you could do instead of getting advice from us. Unless someone out there is a doctor and is willing to diagnose the problem online.

Try doing the 4nps scales with slides instead of straining yourself.
    Hard luck and trouble...

If this is the first time you're felt pain, it may be nothing, but keep an eye on it. If you were stretching your hand, that is probably a normal reaction until you build up the muscle strenght, but it should stop bothering you in a few minutes. If it didn't and continues, lay off the thing that caused it, but you could still play.

If the problem persists, then I'd worry, or if you've been doing A LOT of arm work. You can't get these injuries from a few minutes of doing something. It comes from repeatedly doing things.

In any case, be careful! And good luck.

    That is not entirely true.
Most articles are not discussing these types of things, but 4nps are discussed here and used by many of the members.

Brett Garsed showed me some ways of playing 4NPS, and instead of stretching so far, he prefers to incorporate slides... which is easier on the hands anyway.
Also, check out my most recent article ( "Scales, Scales, Scales Pt.2" ) in which I am talking about playing 4NPS incorporating taps.
