    iJam song suggestions

    OK,
In case anyone isn't already aware, we are going to try a new thing here at ibreathe. iJam You can blame me for the cheesy name!

Everyone is encouraged to participate as this could be a great opportunity for all of us to have some fun and learn something new.

The basic idea is that anyone can contribute in a given song's topic. You are encouraged to post and exchange recordings of the song. You are encouraged to discuss the song (from a theory/performance perspective).

We will (pseudo) democratically decide which songs we tackle. Once a song is chosen a topic will be created exclusively for its analysis.

I urge everyone to reply in this thread with suggestions of songs you would like to see getting the iJam treatment. This thread will be closed on 1st Feb so you have 2 weeks to get your suggestions in.

When closed, I will create a poll based on people's replies. If there are too many suggestions to usefully poll all of them I will make sure that everyone is represented in the poll at least once.

So please, reply with song names (and prefferably artist names & a decent youtube link!!). If you decide to add more songs to your list, please edit your existing topic. This way every user has a single "wish-list" of songs they'd like to analyse.

Don't reply with anything apart from song suggestions in this thread please (I will ask the mods to delete it if you do).

If you want to discuss the general iJam concept you can do so here:

    http://www.ibreathemusic.com/forums/...592#post140592

To get the ball rolling we will begin with "Cry me a river" untill our first song is democratically decided upon. You can find the corresponding topic here:

    Georgia on my Mind
It's just a slightly complicated blues.

How is it a blues? It isn't 12 bars, it doesn't have a blues format, it doesn't use blues scale...

It may have slightly bluesy inflections here and there, and a bluesy swing feel (esp as sung by someone like Ray Charles), but really it's just an orthodox 32-bar AABA jazz standard. (Ie, originally a Hoagy Carmichael popular song, which has become a jazz standard.)

But I'll wait for further votes for this one before launching into an analysis (I'll just say it's somewhat more challenging than Cry Me A River... ).

As a reference, at least, a blues would be great to include (standard 12 bars). Stevie Ray Vaughan "Pride and Joy" could have been the basis.

They are all good songs but I wish you could discuss them elsewhere. I tried to make it clear this thread is for song suggestions only. You can vote when I set a poll.

Just to make it doubly clear I am not going to sift through page after page of discussion to identify which song suggestions to use in the poll.

Mods, if you have any sympathy please help me out by deleting the discussions in this thread.

I simply can't see how this idea will work without some semblance of organisation. If you feel this to be too harsh or restrictive I will be happy to let someone more accepting take over the role of admin-monkey.

Lets just try and stick to suggestions. Take the discussion to the other thread.

I vote for Black Orpheus by Luiz Bonfa (as it says in the real book).

Should I post the chord changes?

chord changes can probably wait until we take it on for study.

but i'll post this. probably this is what anyone else would land on for youtube too. but just to make your life easier if you didn't find it already.

Here are my suggestions for songs for the future:

Donald Fagan - Green Flower Street

Funky number. I don't understand this one at all, so hopefully I will learn something from analysing it!

Cannonball Adderley - Mercy, Mercy, Mercy
This makes me feel like life is worth living.

    Steely Dan - Josie
This ones got a nice simple funk verse with some jazzier chords in the chorus. Should be a good one for both begginers and the more seasoned.

    Grant Green's Sookie Sookie
Yes, its pretty much just one chord. But the funky chops make my knees wobble!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but if you want intelligent Beatles analysis (I mean before you hear ours!) go here:

There is also this absolutely brilliant book, which I only recently began reading:
