Thread: Licks n Runs n Riffs

Bizarro, very cool! Thats somewhat unusual to start out with economy picking. Most people first try the alternate thing and maybe later switch to economy cause theyve never heard of it before. I think Frank Gambale really is the king of economy and what he does is just wonderful.
For me I do some lines that I economy pick but for the most its alternate.

Thanks a lot for your nice compliments, really appreciate it!

    Keep picking...

    Extreme Arp

Actually there's nothing extreme about this arp (its actually pretty simple) other than I swiped it from Nuno.

It's just a simple string skipping arp that nuno seems to like to use a lot. I've been working on some licks using this idea and thought about posting some but then I thought "Who Cares"
unless your actually wanna play my song what I myself do with the idea ain't all that usefull to anyone but myself. It's the basic idea itself thats important.

So I simply laid out a simple A Major Triad string skipping arp on the 4 string sets. You can flat the 3rd to turn em into to minor. Move em around to get the other chords. Twist em up to make em more intresting. Tinker with flatting a root a 1/2 step to toss in a Major 7 or whole step for b7 etc.

Just take the idea (and I'm sure it's not a new idea to most of you, but maybe someone out there has never thought of it befoore) and do your own thing with it

This also (IMO) makes a good picking ex. for myself I find my right hand is far more relaxaed playing on 2 strings than just 1 and that it relaxes even more for string skipping. Ok maybe that's weird but, I think I get more of my strumming motion (wrist motion) when I've got further to go (string skipping).

I also posted a variation pattern that one can apply to all string sets. And a very brief and incomplete example as to how I sort of have been using the idea.

Use it as a building block for musical ideas.
Use it as a picking ex.
Use it as a musical picking ex (make a little etude out of it)(or apply it to a actual progression)

Hey Thorsten, those are some really cool pen. licks/ ideas BTW.
I hadda chance to play around with them past few day. Very cool ideas that everyone can use. Even someone like me that can't shred But hey, it's the idea that counts not just copping someone elses lick and playing it right back at em as is. I mean hey, they already did that right. Idea is what can you do with it.

Thanks a lot, Bash! Glad you like the licks. Yep, that was the idea. Pentatonic is probably the stuff you play most on the guitar and its always the stuff you fall back on.

BTW, very nice skipping licks. Theres millions of variations on those, too.

A lick similar to something I played in the solo of my newest song "Riders High", involving string-skipping and taps. Measure 1 shows the l.h-version only, measure 2 incorporates taps...
    Have fun !

    Here's another Nuno swiped lick
    with string skipping/hammers and pulls
I view this as basic arp even though ya got the second tossed in as well.

This one starts with the fifth then goes r-2-3-2-1
you can do with with all string sets
and of course start somewhere other than the fifth.
or mess up the order of notes
or any twisted thing ya can come up with.

This is just a simple idea in aminor/c major or modes there of
the idea is to skip strings (in this case the second string)
other than that it's just up the scale with hammers
    slide to next postion
    down the scale with pulls
    slide to new postion etc.

Not the worlds most muscial thing as is,
more an idea than a lick

God..I know what an illiterate must feel like!! Just reading the way you guys talk about music and all the theory is wierd. I play things mainly by ear and loosely base it on my limited knowledge of chord progressions.

I hope some of what you guys are talking about rubs off on me too

Cool licks!! I hadn't seen this part of the site, I wonder how many more "Hidden Treasures" you guys have here... I don't have anything to post yet, hopefully I'll get my technique back up soon.
