    Lead Sheet for Evidence

Anybody have a lead sheet for Evidence by Monk? Changes based on Just You, Just Me. It's not in Real Book I, II or III or Ultimate Jazz Fakebook or Monk Aebersold vol. I made one from the record, but I'm not sure it's accurate, and the one that I saw in print, Hal Leonard, looked like it was transcribed by a robot!

According to my Thelonius Monk Study Album (pub. Novello), changes are as follows:

    A section (and intro):
    |Ebmaj7 - - Gm7| - - C7b5b9 - | - Fm7 - - | - Bb7b5b9* - |
    |A7 - - Abm7 | - Db7 - - |Fm7 - - -|F7b5#9 - - - |

    (repeat A)

    B section:
    |Bbm7 - - - |Eb7b5 - - - |Ab69 - - - |Db7 - - - |
    |Gm7/C - - - |Bbm7/C - - - |F13 - - - |Bb7b5b9* - - - |

    (repeat A)

*Bb7b5b9 is basically E7/Bb. (The book has piano voicings if you want them.)

The solo changes given are somewhat simpler:

    A section
    |Ebmaj7 - - - |Gm7 - C7 - |Fm7 - - - | - - Bb7 - |
    |Ebmaj7 - A7b5 - |Abmaj7* - Db7 - |Fm7 - Bb7 - |Ebmaj7 - - - |

    B section
    |Bbm7 - - - |Eb7 - - - |Abmaj7 - - - |Db7 - - - |
    |Ebmaj7 - - - |C7 - - - |F7 - - - |Bb7 - - - |

    * transcriber's comment: solo line implies Abmaj7 rather than Abm7 of head.

Actually, the changes weren't the problem so much as the rhythms. Here's the chart I made, but I'm not at all convinced these rhythms are correct. I even made a guitar tab because I'm a nice guy.

Note: I know there are some non-harmonic tones in some of these voicings, but I thought it was more important to preserve the melodic movement.

Those don't match the transcription in my book.

    In this video -
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHtZ66EcZnU
    - Monk's intro is not identical to what I have, but pretty close. The head rhythms (of the melody), however, are the same, but different to what you have. Yours are mostly either a beat or half-beat late of what they play (and what the book has).
(A clue is that the head in the video starts with an 8th note syncopation of the downbeat, preceded by a couple of 8ths on the snare. The second hit of the melody is on beat 4 of bar 1.)

I'm not sure how to post a PDF here (will take me a while to work it out ), but I can give you the rhythms in the book somehow if you like. (I mean, yours are fine if they work for you!)

(I may be too busy later to do it today)

No worries. Yeah if you have that, I'd like to see it. I transcribed this from I think the Live and the 5-spot w/ Clifford Jordon? recording that was slower and more laid back. It's been awhile that I've searched for a decent chart for this.

I use a freeware program called pdf995, and print to pdf.

Exhibit B: Revised Evidence Lead Sheet

Here are the revised rhythms from the 1963 Japan recording. If there are 16ths in the melody though, I'm lost.

    OK, here ya go:
(As I said before, the intro is not exactly the same as that video - tho close - but the theme (head) is identical.)

    Evidence is a Contrafact!

Evidence is based on the chords of "Just You, Just Me," so you might want to start there for the chords. To see a pdf of the two compared check out from an Italian transcriber. A COntrafact is a tune written to another tunes chord changes - a 'fact' didn't know until recently. Hope it helps!:

I am trying to open the attachment for the lead sheet of Evidence, but it is not opening. Could you repost?

    Thanks!
