Well, not that much of a surprise, huh ? I mean, a lot of people haven´t heard anything written by him. He was only on the first PF-album, and provided some stuff for the second... when most people think of PF ( and I am not talking about fans here ), they think Gilmour-Waters-Wright-Mason

However, went to Amazon yesterday, and "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" was in the top 10 of best selling CDs ( not billboard, Amazon sales chart ). Not that much aof a surprise as Syd just passes away, but still good to see
    Eric

PS. Aaaah...DSOTM... I remember buying that record... had a huge night-shot of the pyramids inside. Had that on my wall for quite some time.

Since I dont own any PF cds i wonder if "Piper....." is worth getting??

I´m an a prog trip lately anway - e.g. Van der Graaf Generator, Camel, etc.... - so i can imagine that I might enjoy that one too.....

It's more of a hippy album than a prog album. Most of it is well...pretty crazy.

It's great if you like songs about buttercups coming alive and underground icy water and gnomes in red tunics.

Check out some clips at Amazon. Its quite psychedelic and... odd, as Russ hinted at. Way different IMO than their latter releases.
If you really want some crazy stuff, check out Ummagumma ( that and "Atom Heart Mother" are the two albums that the guys from PF hate themselves )

thanks, guys! I checked the amazon soundclips - sounds interesting! (and even more "commercial" than Van der Graaf...... now thats some weird stuff...... and they dont even use guitars at all on most if their songs)

I think I´ll give that album a try if I can find it somewhere...........

    thanks
    ALEX :-)

Check ebay UK. They have Piper and Relics both rare vinyl editions now for decent sums.

The studio album of Ummagumma is really really crazy. I dont really like it . But in my opinion the live album is awesome. The atmosphere they create without all these guest musicans they had later on is really great and innovativ IMHO....I have been fascinated by Syd since I read some biographies of him.... It is scaring in what way a personality can change. Anyway I like his music and a lot of his lyrics makes me laughing ...Goodbye Syd!! R.I.P. you crazy diamond.

    "I've got a bike
you can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings, and things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it"

"I know a mouse and he hasnt got a house
I dont know why I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old but hes a good mouse"

A couple classic verses I love off "Bike" in Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
