    Daz, I completely agree !
Its interesting how so many people, when they i.e. hear Vai, spend so much time going online and asking
    - What scales does he play ?
    - What is his gear like ?
    - Is there someone who is faster ?
    - Is he sloppy live ?
    - What does he eat ?
    - What did he say ?

Maybe we would have done the same if we had had the net back then. I remember that when you heard a great player or a cool solo, you sat down, tried to figure it out by ear ( tab book too expensive, and would have taken too long to order ) and PRACTICED. You can get a lot of practicing done in the time it takes to ask at some forum about what to practice
Man, do I sound like a grumpy old man or what ?
I hope that itsobvious Im not talking about the web in general, but about certain tendencies that apparently have established themselves

    Russ - LMAO !

Whoops ! Bet I look pretty good eh for 73 years old !

Eric - You are officially invited to join the Grumpy Old Man's Club

Think it is the internet to blame......so much good but so much bad as come from the darn thing

I could never imagine talking real time to Guitar Players from the US 20 years ago......that is so cool then again some of the horrible, violent things that go on aren't that cool either

I/We had at the best......2 or so decent guitar mags (which were better then than they are now IMO) half a dozen instructional vidoes available(these were a very new concept) and the chance to watch some guy in the guitar store on a Saturday morning.

It was 'harder' for us to learn back then although the expectations were lower.....

Now its swapped around....the expectations are dizzy and numerous (just type in 'fast guitar playing' in google video) but the method of learning has been made easier and more available

I'm just hoping that all the information on the internet will not 'cheapen' the guitar as a credable instrument

Dazzer 73 years old and counting....

I don't think so, they go more for some slower, sexier bluesy stuff.
I've said this before, girls go for singers and drummers-bass players get the leftovers-guitarists get guys (guitar playing and non-playing) asking them questions and comparing you to their favorite guitarist. The only time we are lucky enough to get a girl through playing guitar :

1)She's very ,very, drunk and thinks we are either the singer or the drummer.
2)She's very, very, drunk, realizes that the singer and drummer are taken for the night and confuses us with the bass player.
3)The girl also plays guitar (though this usually ends up in a discussion about guitar playing, then she looks for the singer, drummer or bass player.)
    4) Hit her over the head with your guitar and drag her by her hair "caveman style" into the dressing room.
    5) She thinks we're a roadie.
    6) If you happen to look like any of the male "American Idols"
    7) If you look like good competition for beating up their boyfriend.

Now it all makes sense, somehow the guitarists never getting the girls and that whole thing about their playing being masturbatory...
