Is it actually picked all the way on the record ? I donīt have a recording of it here right now, but I think Kirk Hammett actually uses pick / legato-combinations a lot, so maybe youīre already playing it the right way
And if you wanna play it with all alternate picking, Iīd use strict alternate picking for it. ( d-u-d-u )
Hope this helps

I did learn a lot of riffs and some leads from the first two Metallica records, but itīs been a while, and I think I would have played that part with a combination of picking and legato...
But again, itīs been a while...

Metallica doesn't play those riffs with the open E. It's correct otherwise.

Well for that lick, and other licks in a smiliair patter I always economy pick. I think its faster and much easier. What do yal think?

what do you mean by economy picking? in this case, EP could only be alternate picking, isnit?

I play it with strict alternate picking, I don't see that economy would make it any easier.

i think metal prep is right

after all i think that by learning other people's musics, what we are really doing is try to play like them.
I don't think jaymz would ever use economy picking in a song, cause in the great majority of metallica's songs he only uses dowstrokes. pretty hard too;)
