I'm getting the hang of playing over changes, and then today, I was playing a piece with a solo........about 100 bars of Dm6/9. How do you hold a listeners interest over so many bars of the same chord?

P.S. I'm talking about trumpet here, but I'm sure soloing ideas can be applied to any instrument.

If so, in jazz they may reffer to it as the head. You can play the head say once then maybe allow a rhythmic section. then play the head again ahd do a simple solo. then the head again and a different solo. then maybe a bass solo or something esle. Always returning to the head. If the song does not have a heas, make one up. this will be the flavor for the song.
