View Full Version : Sheet Music, Roman Numberals on top of bar

I am currently using the book Guitar Hanon by MI press, and on top of the first bar of music there is a roman numeral or two. What does this mean? The first exercise in in C, it is an arp exercise and the roman numerals read "II or III".

Any ideas?

i think that's the position number ... the position number is the fret number where your index finger stars from.

So example, given a middle C with position number 8 means you have to fret the 6th string fret 8 (index finger).

That makes sense for that example, I'll check with the other examples,

Yep, checked with the other examples and it does seem to represent the starting position.
