I'm trying to make a Progressive Metal song and I need some ideas.

What are the chords usually used in this genre (clean and distorted)? I'm pretty sure they're not all power chords (5th chords)

What are other elements can be usually found in a prog song?

Scales???

Hi, i would suggest to use a chord for example a Cmaj with a b9.

This chord is very often used in Dream Theater Songs (Home, very often in the new Album,...)

It sounds very nice for mystic situations.

As Scale over this Chord you can use The Spanish Phrygian Scale. It's on the 5th degree of harmonic minor.

In the case of C with a added b9 it would be F harmonic minor

have a nice day, paul

try this:
d-5
a-3
E-3
the root is the C on the A string, but with the added 5th below it sounds cool(er)

also, try using 9ths in your power chords...they look like this:
d-9
a-7
E-5

check out some odd time stuff too...
