View Full Version : An Observation

Some of the members of my guitar class have commented on this also.

Last night I watched the CMA awards. Every time an artist performed and he/she played the guitar, I found myself really observing them as they played. I am noticing the music more than the lyrics.

I find myself looking at a little bit of everything. I'll look at guitar one second, then drums, then bass, then guitar, I try to make myself get the big picture.

After about year of playing I was in the same place (well, I still do it.) the coolest thing I did was to go watch a local jazz band play (actually they are all the faculty of the universities jazz studies program). I was watching the sax player play all of these really cool solos and I'm looking at his fingers and it dawned on me that it didn't mean a thing to me.

I don't know anything about saxophone so I couldn't tell what notes he was playing by watching so I ended up just sitting back and listening intently and trying to hum his solos. GREAT for my ears and a real reality check on musicianship.
