Which software would you rather use to communicate real time with other IBM community members?

Great question Koala.

My first choice: ICQ.

A few days ago I installed the new messenger and it's got some very nice features. The webcam feature is working incredibly well - but, well, it's microsoft ...

I know what you mean Guni, the new messenger is pretty good, and i really like the fact that its being kept simple. But as you said, it is microsoft.

ICQ has got its cons as well, but for handling large contact lists and leaving messages for offliners is a great benefit.

I have never used chat software... Sad but true!!

What are the benefits? How would it help the common guitarist?

ICQ has always been such a beast though. I remember using it when it first came out years and years ago and watched it go from being a nice little app to being the bloated mofo it is today. I voted for MSN Messenger however that is actually because I use a Jabber (http://www.jabber.org/about/overview.html) client which allows me to chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber all at the same time. Not to mention it is very small and clean.

So in short my vote is for anything but ICQ ;) If you use windows I highly recommend checking out Rhymbox (http://www.rhymbox.com/) (jabber client) for the nicest chat client there is.

EDIT: Oops, I lied. I've got an ICQ transport too, I don't care what you guys pick ;) I still recommend checking out out the links above though.

Well bizarro, my goal through this poll is to establish what sofware accomodates most of the active memebers of the community. So in the near future ill take care of setting up a chat network where we will all be able to participate in live discussons regarding any topic at all which can the be uploaded into forums as transcripts that might clear up any doubts. APart from that you will be able to see which members of IbM are online at any given time even if theyre not visiting the website, this will allow for a tighter community, for there will be even better communication which you can use in any way you might imagine.

I agree that while ICQ is a nice service, the clients from Mirabilis are totally bloatware. I've been using the Miranda (http://www.miranda-im.org/) instant messenger for a while now, and it's quite a nice experience. For all you poor guys and gals that are using Macintosh ;) , Proteus (http://www.indigofield.com/) and Fire (http://fire.sourceforge.net/) are popular alternatives. They can both handle multiple account types (ICQ, AIM, ...).

Anyway, ICQ got my vote.

A good question for the poll would have been something like "How often do you use software of this type?" With answer options such as regularly, seldom, never, etc.
