I have found that the use of two octave lowered notes from a chord, even if completely consonant, gives an extremely desonant and eary sound. Are there any classical peices where such big jumps to the low end of the piano are used frequently?

Do a search (here or google) for "Low Interval Limit".
You answer lies there I believe.
