    Question Confused About Key

    Hi There.

I'm looking at a song where the sheet music indicates the song is in C, however, I see a G-minor chord and a B-flat major chord in the progression.

    The progression is C-Gm-Bb-F.

I would expect C-G7-B-half dim- F in the key of C.

    Why the Gm and Bb?

    Thanks..

ps: tried to upload screen cap..no luck.

It's possible the sheet music is wrong. The chords all seem to be in key of F to me.

However, the key is what sounds like the key - you can't be sure of it from sheet music. (Even if the key sig is correct, the same key sig can indicate either major or relative minor, two different keys.)

If the key sounds like C - as if that's the chord you feel the piece comes to rest on - then the key is C no matter what the other chords are. (There is no rule saying you can only use diatonic chords. Chromatic harmony - chords from outside the key - is conventional and extremely common, even in the simplest rock songs.)

Which chord sounds like the key chord? Is that the whole progression, or are there other chords? If that's all there is, are they all evenly spaced?

If you tell us what the song is, I'll have a listen. That's the only way to be sure.

OK, I've listened and the key definitely sounds like F to me. (I heard it in a different key, but the 4th chord is the key chord.)
The sheet music should have 1 flat.

I didn't listen to the whole song, and it's occurred to me there may be another section that IS in C, and might explain why they gave it a blank key sig. But that 4-chord loop definitely sounds to me like it comes to rest on the last chord, making that the natural key centre.

We play this song - We do it in G for a D, Am, C, G. Or V, ii, IV, I
If you do it in F using the V, ii, IV, I you get C, Gm, Bb, F as mentioned.

I think the key signature on your sheet music in in error, or probably did not get changed as the key was changed somewhere in the past.
