View Full Version : Music Notation Markup Language

Hi all,

I was doing some research about better ways of showing music notion online - creating images is just so inflexible. I stumbled across many sites that claim to work on all kinds of solutions, be it using XML, Java or browser plugins. But I got loads of broken links or 'Coming Soon' sites. It seems that this is still in its infancy as this article http://www.keyboardmag.com/features/netsmarts9812/netsmarts.shtml shows.

I know that there are some computer geeks among us. Is anyone involved in such a project? Has anyone tested some of the approaches out there? Any links, articles, tips are appreciated.

The best program out there right now for doing music notation is Finale 2002. It supports web-publishing. There is also a free downloadable viewer which is a plug in to IE/Netscape :http://www.codamusic.com/coda/fin_viewer.asp

Finale is a great program. I have an older version and use it all the time.

As soon as I hear 'browser plugin' I get a bit nervous as this, most of the time leads to compatibility problems (and there's only a Mac beta version for now).

I am just downloading the demo version and I will thoroughly test Coda's solution.

I just have the feeling that there must be a more global solution in development - a sytem that doesn't depend on browsers or plugins....
